Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai (born 1 November 1973) is an Indian film actress. She worked as a model before starting her acting career, and ultimately won the Miss India and Miss World pageant titles in 1994. Rai has starred in films in various languages including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.
Often cited by the media as the “most beautiful woman in the world”, Rai made her acting debut with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar (1997) and had her first commercial success with Jeans (1998). She earned public recognition with the Hindi films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Devdas (2002), which fetched her two Best Actress awards at Filmfare.





1. FOR ME, IT WENT BEYOND BEING A BEAUTY QUEEN. FOR ME, IT WAS ABOUT BEING THE 20-YEAR-OLD GIRL FROM INDIA ON INTERNATIONAL PLATFORM AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ACTUALLY WOULD ASSUME THAT I WASN’T EVEN EDUCATED IN INDIA BECAUSE OF THE WAY I’D SPEAK. AND THEY’D BE LIKE, ‘HAVE YOU STUDIED IN INDIA? DO YOU ACTUALLY SPEAK ENGLISH OUT THERE?’ AND, I WAS LIKE, ‘THIS IS SO INTERESTING THAT SO MANY PEOPLE KNOW SO LITTLE ABOUT MY COUNTRY.’ AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO DO WHEN I SET OUT ON THIS LITTLE MISSION IN MY HEAD.

2. IT’S A WONDERFULLY TOLD STORY, … I LOOK FOR WORK THAT IS MEANINGFUL AND WHERE I CAN BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO TELL A STORY.

3. SEXY IN INDIA IS NOT CONSIDERED POSITIVE. BUT, WITH TODAY’S CROP OF FRESH FACES IN THE MODELLING ARENA, BEING SEXY IS AN ASSET.

4. UNFORTUNATELY MY PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT IN SOME OF MY PROJECTS IS BEING MISCONSTRUED AS HIGH-HANDEDNESS.

5. PEOPLE JUST CAME IN THRONGS AND STOOD AROUND, … IT WAS VERY OVERWHELMING FOR MY CO-STARS.

6. EVEN IN INDIA THE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY MIGHT BE THE BEST KNOWN BUT THERE ARE MOVIES MADE IN OTHER REGIONAL LANGUAGES IN INDIA, BE IT TAMIL OR BENGALI. THOSE EXPERIENCES TOO ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES IN BOMBAY.

7. WELL, WHEN PEOPLE CALL ME REAL. I LOVE IT. AND IT HAS A LOT OF MEANING, … IT MEANS A LOT TO ME AND IT’S TOUCHING. PEOPLE WOULD SEE THAT AND ACKNOWLEDGE IT.

8. SOMEONE SAID TO ME THIS WEEK THAT YOU ARE A GREEK GODDESS WITH THE SOUL OF AN INDIAN. WHAT IS THE FINEST COMPLEMENT YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED? THE ONE THAT TOUCHED YOU THE MOST.

9. I ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT MY SILENCE ON SEVERAL TOPICS WILL BE AN ADVANTAGE IN THE LONG RUN.

10. DO I LOOK LIKE A MASOCHIST OR THE SORT WHO’D GO THROUGH PHYSICAL OR VERBAL ABUSE? A YEAR AFTER MY ACCIDENT… WHEN I FELL OF THE STAIRS, I’M STILL BEING ASKED IF I WAS PHYSICALLY ABUSED. IT SADDENS ME THAT I’M BEING PORTRAYED AS THIS BATTERED WOMAN.

13. OKAY, LET’S TAKE STATISTICS. HOW MANY INTERVIEWS HAVE I GIVEN YOU IN THE LAST SIX YEARS? JUST FIVE OR SIX? DOESN’T THAT SAY SOMETHING? I HATE TO SOUND IMMODEST, BUT THIS DATES BACK TO MY PERSONALITY SINCE THE AGE OF 13. I’VE ALWAYS GOT ATTENTION, WHICH AT TIMES HAS BEEN QUITE UNWARRANTED.

14. I’M NOT THE TYPE WHO’LL YELL ABOUT MY ACHIEVEMENTS FROM THE ROOFTOPS.

15. I WAS STUDYING TO BE AN ARCHITECT, I WASN’T PLOTTING TO JOIN THE MOVIES. FILMS WERE JUST ANOTHER CAREER OPTION. I TOOK ACTING UP WITH THE SAME SCHOOLGIRL ENTHUSIASM I HAD FOR EXAMINATIONS. ACTING IS A JOB AND I TAKE IT VERY SERIOUSLY.

16. I WAS MORE EXCITED THAN SCARED, AT THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK IN AN ENGLISH MOVIE.

17. BUT I HAVE MADE NO CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO LOOK BATTERED AND BRUISED. IT IS JUST THE WAY ONE FEELS WHEN ONE IS PUT IN A CERTAIN TRAUMATIC SITUATION.

18. PEOPLE JUST CAME IN THRONGS AND STOOD AROUND. IT WAS VERY OVERWHELMING FOR MY CO-STARS.

19. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IF THERE’S A ROLE WHICH I AM SUITED FOR, I’LL BE SIGNED ON. I’LL NEVER GO BEGGING.

20. WE’LL CROSS THE BRIDGE WHEN WE REACH IT, … BUT YEAH. WE – LET’S SEE. WE’LL WORK ON THE STORY, WORK ON THE SCENE. I’LL WORK ON THE PART AND, AND LET’S SEE.
